Extracting teeth can be more effective and less painful than it sounds

Simple tooth extraction sounds painful and invasive, but it’s actually an effective way to relieve extreme sensitivity and treat advanced periodontal disease while avoiding major oral surgery.

Simple tooth extraction can resolve a variety of dental problems

Simple extractions can relieve pain or set the stage for another cosmetic or restorative procedure. It can also be used for:

  • Advanced periodontal disease
  • Loose tooth roots
  • Extra teeth
  • Baby teeth impeding adult tooth development
  • Pre-orthodontic treatment
  • Removal of fractured or malformed teeth
  • Decay severe enough to preclude root canal therapy

Extraction happens in a single painless procedure

The first step when the Doctor extracts the tooth of patients in Sea Girt, NJ is X-rays of the affected tooth or teeth, for use in planning the procedure. When the Doctor has selected a strategy, you’ll be given a local anesthetic to ensure that the procedure is painless.

A tool called a dental elevator will be used to raise the tooth from the gums, loosening ligaments and soft tissue around its base. Next, a pair of forceps will be used to gently rock the tooth back and forth until it becomes detached from the tissues holding it in place.

In rare instances when a tooth does not respond to gentle tugging, it may need to be broken up into smaller, easier-to-remove fragments.

After simple tooth extraction, the now-empty socket will be packed with gauze, upon which you will apply pressure by biting down. In certain cases, the socket will be sutured to promote healing.

Alternative arrangements may need to be made if you become sick within a week of your scheduled extraction.
